Job Summary/Basic Functions

Resident Advisors (RAs) are part-time student staff members within Housing and Residence Life who live and work in an assigned residence hall or community.

RAs play an essential role in supporting residents’ experience of campus life and creating communities where students feel connected, supported, and engaged. They take time to get to know their residents, build relationships with and among them, and serve as positive peer leaders.

RAs help maintain safe and respectful communities by upholding university policies, addressing concerns as they arise, and referring residents to appropriate campus resources. RAs utilize programming, initiatives, and intentional conversations to help residents build Growth, Perspective, and Community within the assigned residential community.

RAs are selected for their leadership potential, communication skills, positive attitudes, and commitment to helping others succeed at EKU.

Compensation for this position begins with a $1500 stipend per semester and a credit to your student account to cover on-campus housing. Opportunity to work up to 10 additional hours per week as a Community Receptionist (CR) at an hourly rate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Have a minimum 2.50 EKU Institutional GPA and be a full-time EKU student (enrolled in at least 12-credit hours as an undergraduate student and 9-credit hours as graduate student) by the start of the employment date.
  • Must be in good judicial standing with the University.
  • Must have a housing contract for the 2026-2027 academic year with a payment of the Housing Commitment fee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An upperclassmen student (2 semesters completed at EKU)
  • Experience living on a college campus
  • Leadership experience (i.e. initiative, service, etc)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Time management and organizational abilities

Job Duties:

  • Utilize strategies to engage residents, foster learning, and create connections within their assigned residential community through programming and intentional conversations. - (Essential)
  • Demonstrate strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills when interacting with residents, guests, and fellow staff members in the residential community. - (Essential)
  • Attend and actively participate in key operational periods. This includes hall openings, hall closings, breaks, and Student Staff Training (Fall & Spring). - (Essential)
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation within the assigned residential area which includes weekends and break periods. - (Essential)
  • Adhere and address to University and Housing and Residence Life policies as outlined in the housing contract and Student Code of Conduct as well as state, local, and federal laws and ordinances. - (Essential)
  • Provide direction and information to students during emergency situations, such as fire alarms, weather emergencies, etc. - (Essential)
  • Maintain a reasonable, consistent presence and availability to residents in the assigned residential community. - (Essential)
  • Regularly work the community desk and provide a welcoming environment for all residents, staff, and visitors. - (Essential)
  • Ensure the residential facilities are well-maintained and safe through regular inspections and consistent rounds to address facility concerns. - (Essential)
  • Maintain appropriate use of staff access, department software, keys, equipment, and supplies. - (Essential)
  • Address resident, floor, and community conflicts according to Housing & Residence Life policies. - (Essential)
  • Submit any administrative paperwork or communication accurately and timely. - (Essential)
  • Other duties as assigned. - (Essential)
