Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department of English at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for Academic Year 2025-2026. Applicants should hold an earned Ph.D. in an appropriate writing-related field at the time of appointment. The position begins August 1, 2025.

Applicants should have expertise in at least one area of writing (Creative Writing, Composition & Rhetoric, Professional Writing, etc.) and experience in a secondary area of writing. The successful candidate will be a dedicated teacher and scholar who has evidence of teaching different kinds of writing at the university level, a record of scholarly engagement (e.g., publications, presentations, grants, ongoing research, etc.), and has an agenda for engagement with the writing community.

English faculty teach a 4/4 load which may include undergraduate major and general education courses, creative writing, and technical writing, as well as courses in our online MA program in English and Writing Professions (MAEWP) and in our low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program, Bluegrass Writers Studio. Additionally, faculty are expected to mentor students, serve on thesis committees, and maintain an active record of service and scholarship.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Earned Ph.D. in a writing-related field from an accredited institution at time of appointment. ABD applicants may be considered but must have a Ph.D. (verified by official transcripts) at the time of appointment.

Experience:

-Two years of college teaching experience
-Expertise in one area of writing and competency in a second area of writing
-Knowledge of current practices in professional communication and social media
-Effective interpersonal communication skills
-Analytic and problem solving skills
-Active and effective listening skills
-Ability to collaborate with peers and students
-Ability to understand and adapt to current trends in professional communication

Licensure & Certifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

-A minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching at the college or university level
-Strong record of publications
-Experience teaching online synchronous and asynchronous courses
-Willingness to teach summer courses

Job Duties:

  • Maintain a 4/4 teaching load, teaching courses as assigned at the times and in the locations necessary to meet the needs of EKU students.
  • Utilize effective teaching methods, innovative teaching techniques, and teaching modalities, and multiple evaluation and assessment procedures as a means to help meet the needs of EKU students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach, develop, and implement courses related to one’s curricular area.
  • Develop and maintain an active research agenda.
  • Keep up to date with one’s field and curricular areas by reading and reviewing current scholarly or creative works and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and faculty development activities.
  • Demonstrate the willingness and ability to work effectively with colleagues to support the mission of EKU, its academic units, and its campus community.
