Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for Academic Year 2025-2026. Applicants should hold an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Literacy Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a comparable degree from an accredited institution at the time of appointment. The position begins August 2025.

The position serves Education majors. It requires three years of teaching experience in an elementary, middle, or secondary grade public school classroom. Prior experience in higher education is preferred. The successful candidate will teach online and in-person education classes at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or doctoral level in a 4/4 annual teaching load. Candidate should be willing to teach within the professional core for education majors and literacy specific courses, including literacy assessment, language arts foundations for elementary and middle grades, language arts methods, and children’s literature.

The successful candidate will participate in service to the department, university, and community (including chairing and/or serving on various committees across department, college, and university levels) as well as maintain an active scholarly agenda. Priority will be given to applicants who have established or are establishing an active program of literacy research, with an interest in disseminating their work to broader public audiences as well as to scholarly peers, and whose work will contribute to innovations across Eastern Kentucky University. The successful candidate may oversee clinical experiences, advise students, and serve/chair dissertations. In addition, membership and participation in state, regional, national or international professional organizations is recommended.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Literacy Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a comparable degree from an accredited institution at the time of appointment.

Experience: Three years of teaching experience in an elementary, middle, or secondary grade public school classroom.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain a 4/4 teaching load, teaching courses as assigned at the times and in the locations necessary to meet the needs of EKU students.
  • Utilize effective teaching methods, innovative teaching techniques, and teaching modalities, and multiple evaluation and assessment procedures as a means to help meet the needs of EKU students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach, develop, and implement courses related to one’s curricular area.
  • Develop and maintain an active research agenda.
  • Keep up to date with one’s field and curricular areas by reading and reviewing current scholarly or creative works and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and faculty development activities.
  • Advise students in fulfilling program, departmental, college, and university committee assignments.
  • Demonstrate the willingness and ability to work effectively with colleagues to support the mission of EKU, its academic units, and its campus community.
