Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Assistant Counsel, which reports to the University’s Deputy Counsel, provides representation of and legal counsel to the University in practice areas such as, for example, contract, employment, and higher education law. The Assistant Counsel is expected to handle the production of records pursuant to the Kentucky Open Records Act, subpoenas, and other legal orders as well as to serve as the University Counsel’s designee on the Student Assistance and Intervention Team and other University boards, committees, and councils as needed/assigned. Additionally, the Assistant Counsel routinely engages in legal review and interpretation of University Policies and Regulations and provides training and written guidance on legal issues as needed/requested by University constituents.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: J.D. Required

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of related legal experience, preferably in the legal areas of contracts, employment and/or higher education law.

Licensure & Certifications: Must be a current member in good standing of the Bar in any state at the time of application. Membership with the Kentucky Bar Association must be acquired prior to undertaking the work of this position and, thereafter, must be maintained throughout employment in the position.

Job Duties:

  • 40% - Provides legal counsel to University Administration as well as serves as the University Counsel’s designee on the Student Assistance and Intervention Team and on other University boards, committees, and councils as needed/assigned. - (Essential)
  • 30% - Receives, compiles records for, and timely responds to all Kentucky Open Records Act requests as well as subpoenas and other legal orders served on the University. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Supports the office functions by completing all other duties and special projects as assigned - (Essential)
  • 15% - Engages in legal review and interpretation of University Policies and Regulations. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Provides training and written guidance on legal issues as needed/requested by University constituents. - (Essential)
