Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department Languages & Cultural Studies, Anthropology and Sociology at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for full-time 9-month Lecturer in American Sign Language and/or Interpretation Studies with teaching and service responsibilities beginning Jan. 1, 2026.

The position begins Jan. 1, 2026.

Primary responsibilities for the position include teaching undergraduate level American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf studies, and/or interpretation courses. Faculty members will teach primarily using a traditional face-to-face modality. Online synchronous or asynchronous formats may also be used from time to time.

Applicants eligible for the Lecturer position in American Sign Language and/or Interpretation Studies should:

1) Hold an earned master’s degree (or higher) in American Sign Language Teaching, Interpreter Education, Deaf Studies or a related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment,

AND
2) Hold appropriate national professional certifications (for example from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), or other related certifications recognized by the Kentucky Licensure Board of Interpreters),
OR
May substitute current certification with a minimum of an ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating level of 4, or an ASL: Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating level of “Superior” and obtain ASLTA certification within 2 years of initial employment for the continuation of a contract.

In addition to a typical teaching load, the successful Non-Tenure-Track candidate will participate in service to the department, college, and university.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Applicants eligible for the Lecturer in American Sign Language and/or Interpretation Studies position should:

Hold an earned master’s degree (or higher) in American Sign Language Teaching, Interpreter Education, Deaf Studies or a related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment.

Experience: • Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language
• College/university and/or P-12 experience
• Because of the tight scope and sequence of our curriculum, the candidate must be team-oriented
• Faculty are expected to be accountable, self-directed, and life-long learners

Licensure & Certifications: Hold appropriate national professional certifications (for example from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), or other related certifications recognized by the Kentucky Licensure Board of Interpreters),

OR

• 5 years teaching experience in higher education

  • % - Keep up to date with one’s field and curricular areas by reading and reviewing current scholarly or creative works and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and faculty development activities - (Essential)
