Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is searching for Lab Assistants/Tutors for Spring 2026.

Some mathematics courses are taught in large sections. Labs have been created to provide a setting for small group tutoring, testing, and monitoring weekly progress. The labs are offered to personalize the large groups and provide a comfortable atmosphere where students can ask questions and receive personal attention in their areas of difficulty.

Additionally, some mathematics courses have a co-requisite course to help remediate students who are not college ready. These have been created to provide a setting for small group tutoring, testing, monitoring weekly progress and remediation of content. These are offered to provide a comfortable atmosphere where students can ask questions and receive personal attention in their areas of difficulty.

A lab assistant is assigned to each of these courses to assist the instructor in facilitating their course one to two times a week. Job duties may include but are not limited to assisting students during class, grading, prepping material outside of class, and taking attendance.

Each lab assistant is required to tutor at least one hour per week in the tutoring center. Additionally, they must proctor one final exam and tutor two hours in the tutoring center during final exam week. Additional hours will be required for tutors who work hours in the tutoring center in addition to the required hours for the lab assistant position.

Lab assistants meet with the instructors of the course to discuss details of conducting each lab. Lab assistants will also help students understand concepts and clarify procedures and will listen to students and try to understand their difficulties.

Mathematics and statistics tutors provide tutorial assistance to students in lower-level mathematics and statistics classes (classes up to and including the first level of calculus and the first level of statistics). Tutors may occasionally help proctor exams or even substitute for a lab assistant.

*** There will be a mandatory training session prior to the start of each semester. ***

Students who serve as lab assistants are eligible to apply for one hour of co-op credit for each lab taught. The work requirement for one co-op credit is 80 hours of work.
