Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Sr. Counselor, Intervention & Academic Readiness provides high-touch, case-managed support for students experiencing academic, financial, or personal barriers to persistence. This role delivers individualized intervention, coaching, and barrier resolution services to help students regain momentum, achieve enrollment readiness, and progress toward degree completion.
The Sr. Counselor serves as a primary point of contact for at-risk students, leading outreach, coordinating support services, and maintaining case ownership through resolution. Through the use of student success technologies and data-informed practices, this position ensures timely, proactive intervention and contributes to institutional efforts to improve retention and student success outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field.
Master’s degree preferred in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, or Student Affairs.
Experience can be substituted for specific degree requirements but not educational level.
Occasional travel and evening/weekend work may be required for recruitment and engagement events.

Experience: Minimum two years of experience in recruitment, student success, career coaching, counseling, crisis intervention, or academic support services.
Experience working with at-risk student populations, retention initiatives, or case management preferred.
Strong understanding of data-informed recruitment, student development, academic advising, and persistence strategies.

Job Duties:

  • 25% - Intervention and Academic Readiness Support Provide one-on-one counseling and coaching for students facing academic, financial, or personal challenges. Develop individualized intervention plans to support persistence and academic recovery. Guide students in understanding academic expectations, policies, and recovery pathways. Conduct targeted outreach to students identified through early alert and midterm progress reporting. Support students in developing actionable plans to address academic barriers. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Student Success Technology & Systems Utilize CRM systems to manage and document student interactions and intervention activity. Serve as a primary contact for students identified through early alert, academic standing, and midterm recovery processes. Analyze data to identify trends, monitor engagement, and inform intervention strategies. Coordinate personalized communication and outreach efforts aligned with institutional priorities. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Complex Barrier Resolution & Case Ownership Assume ownership of assigned student cases, maintaining consistent follow-up until barriers are resolved. Navigate complex financial aid, registration, and administrative challenges, including verification, SAP, and disbursement issues. Translate complex processes into clear, actionable steps for students. Escalate issues appropriately while maintaining accountability for case progress and resolution. Identify patterns and trends that signal systemic barriers to enrollment or persistence. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Readmitted & Returning Student Support Support students returning after academic difficulty or time away from the institution. Guide students through re-entry processes, expectations, and next steps toward enrollment and persistence. Conduct structured check-ins during the return term to promote continued engagement. Identify and intervene with students at risk of stopping out prior to disengagement. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Learning Contract Implementation Support implementation and monitoring of academic learning contracts and success plans. Track student engagement and progress with required interventions. Reinforce accountability and adherence to academic recovery expectations. - (Essential)
