Job Summary/Basic Functions

Tutor Advisors (TAs) will mentor, guide, chaperone, and supervise students during the six-week Upward Bound Summer Chautauqua for high school students. TAs serve as the direct and immediate contact for student questions and concerns and also serve as liaisons between the UB full-time staff and students. TAs play a crucial role as a near-peer mentor to support and encourage students’ academic, behavioral, and emotional growth through this intensive academic and cultural summer program.
Responsibilities:
• Work closely with the Head TA and administrative full-time staff to support and implement the Summer Chautauqua.
• Maintain professionalism, enthusiasm, flexibility, and positivity during the intensive Summer Chautauqua.
• Demonstrate excellent communication and writing skills to concisely report student progress, concerns, or incidents to Head TA and/or UB full-time staff.
• Organize activities that are creative, interactive, and meaningful at weekly TA family nights as well as during free time and other scheduled activities.
• Encourage students to reach post-secondary education goals and embrace a love for learning.
• Be directly concerned with the safety and well-being of all participants.
• Listen and strive to understand the needs of UB students.
• Demonstrate effective organization and leadership skills.
• Supervise a “TA Family” consisting of up to 12 high school students and also monitor the behavior of all program participants during program activities and cultural enrichment trips.
• Demonstrate the ability to be a peer mentor and role model who is empathetic, caring, and responsive to student needs.
• Attend and actively participate at the Tutor Advisor Orientation Training prior to the start of the summer component.
• Contribute to a program culture that is welcoming, accepting, supportive, and encouraging of students, staff, and others.
• Encourage team building and collaboration among participants and other TAs.
• Encourage and facilitate critical thinking and a growth mindset among students.
• Know and enforce all policies, rules, and expectations of the Upward Bound Program as stated in the TA and student handbooks and as directed by the Director, Assistant Director, Coordinator, and Head TA
• Be familiar with the Emergency Action Plan.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Must either be enrolled in a post-secondary education program for the upcoming fall semester or recently have obtained a Bachelor’s degree.

Must have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5

Experience: Must have completed at least two years of college course work after high school.

Experience with low-income, first generation students and/or prior experience with TRIO or similar programs is preferred, but not required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Must demonstrate a desire to facilitate students’ success.
