Summer Elective Instructor Positions
EKU Upward Bound – Summer Chautauqua 2026
The Eastern Kentucky University Upward Bound Program is seeking innovative and engaging Summer Elective Instructors for the 2026 Summer Chautauqua to teach a variety of elective courses.
Program Overview
The Upward Bound Summer Chautauqua is a six-week, residential, college-preparatory program hosted on EKU’s campus from June 13 – July 22, 2026. Students live on campus and participate in a structured, simulated college experience designed to build academic confidence, independence, and college readiness.
Instructional Dates
• Classes: June 15 – July 15, 2026
• Schedule: Monday through Friday (5 instructional weeks)
Teaching Load & Schedule
• Approximately 15–20 students per section
• Instructors will teach five elective sections
• Workday: Thursdays only, 8:40 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.
• Includes a 50-minute duty-free lunch on campus
Course Focus
Elective courses are designed to spark interest, curiosity, and excitement beyond traditional classroom instruction. Course offerings are proposed and developed by the instructor and may include, but are not limited to:
• Psychology
• 3-D Printing / Technology
• Business & Entrepreneurship
• Art & Design
• Physical Education & Wellness
• Drama / Performance
• Other innovative or interdisciplinary topics
Instructors are strongly encouraged to offer multiple course options, rather than a single repeated course, to provide students with variety and choice during scheduling.
Instructor Responsibilities
• Design and implement engaging, student-centered curricula
• Align courses with Upward Bound goals of academic enrichment and personal growth
• Use student data and input to shape course topics and instruction
• Foster independence and participation within a college-style learning environment
Additional Expectations
• Attend a brief instructor orientation in late May
• Participate in the student awards banquet
• Attend an end-of-summer debrief meeting
Ideal Candidate
• Creative, student-focused educator or professional
• Experience teaching or facilitating youth programs preferred
• Ability to engage students in non-traditional, exploratory learning
• Commitment to the mission of Upward Bound and student success
Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants with prior Upward Bound/ TRIO programs experience or experience teaching traditionally under served populations.
