Job Summary/Basic Functions

NOVA is a federally funded grant project designed to increase the retention and graduation of students who are first-generation, low-income, and/or have diagnosed disabilities. The NOVA Program at EKU was founded in 1975 and currently serves 206 students with programming related to academic success, health and wellness, diversity and belonging, financial literacy, and professional development. The Academic Advisor is a student-facing role with responsibilities including academic advising and case management, curriculum design and delivery, recruitment and marketing, and other duties as assigned. The Academic Advisor should be committed to diversity and inclusion, attentive to the needs of students with differences and disabilities, energized by helping others, and invested in supporting student success and wellness. This position will report to and work closely with the NOVA Associate Director to fulfill TRIO SSS grant requirements. The position is fully funded with federal grant funds, and continued employment is contingent upon the availability of funds. This grant is on year four (4) of a five (5) year award.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in relevant field (education, behavioral and/or social science, higher education administration or other related discipline) from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is required.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a higher education setting is required.
Experience in academic advising or course instruction is preferred.
Experience working with TRiO or other programs focused on students who are low-income, first-generation, or academically disadvantaged is preferred.
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.

Licensure & Certifications: None

Preferred Qualifications:

Excellent interpersonal skills (particularly in working with a diverse student population), organizational, and management skills are required.
The ability to speak comfortably before groups is required.
A working knowledge of computers and various office technology is required.
Knowledge of academic policies and procedures of Eastern Kentucky University, the U.S. Department of Higher Education, and higher education is preferred.
Knowledge of student development theory and its application to student academic support services is preferred.
