Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Assistant Turf Manager will support the Director of Sports Turf in the maintenance, preparation, and overall management of all athletic fields and related facilities. This role requires hands-on involvement in turf care, staff supervision, equipment maintenance, and ensuring all playing surfaces meet the highest standards for safety and playability. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, technical expertise in turfgrass management, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree required. Preferred in Horticulture or in a related field is required.

Experience: - Minimum of one years of experience in sports turf maintenance, golf course maintenance, or a similar field.
- Experience maintaining both natural grass and synthetic turf surfaces is preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Licensure & Certifications: - Valid drivers license.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a state pesticide applicator certification within six months of hire.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Job Duties:

  • 50% - Turf Maintenance and Irrigation Management. - Assist in the planning and execution of routine turf maintenance, including mowing, trimming, aerating, fertilizing, and pest management. - Maintain both natural grass and synthetic turf fields for optimal playability and aesthetics. - Monitor field conditions and implement corrective actions as needed. - Manage irrigation systems, including scheduling, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure efficient water usage. - Adjust irrigation programs based on weather, soil moisture levels, and turf health needs. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Field Preparation and Safety Compliance. - Prepare fields for practices, competitions, and special events in coordination with athletic staff. - Execute field marking, painting, and sport-specific layout preparations. - Inspect playing surfaces before and after events for safety and compliance. - Ensure all maintenance activities adhere to safety regulations, environmental standards, and best practices. - Maintain accurate records of chemical applications and implement risk management strategies. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Equipment Maintenance. - Supervise the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of all turf management equipment, including mowers, aerators, sprayers, and utility vehicles. - Ensure routine servicing of machinery to extend longevity and maintain peak performance. - Train staff on proper equipment handling and safety procedures. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Staff Supervision. • Assist in recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising part-time and seasonal staff involved in turf maintenance and field preparation. • Provide guidance and leadership to ensure staff execute responsibilities efficiently and safely. • Maintain communication with the Director of Sports Turf to optimize work schedules and staffing resources. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Support the office functions by completing all other duties and special projects as assigned - (Essential)
