Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Institute for Creative and Collaborative Arts: Art, Communication, Music, and Design and the School of Music at Eastern Kentucky University are seeking engaging and experienced candidates to apply for a tenure-track position as the Director of Orchestra. Applicants should hold an earned Doctorate in Music or a related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment. ABD candidates may be considered but must have a doctorate (verified by official transcripts) at the time of appointment.

Duties include, but are not limited to: directing the Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Musical Theatre Pit Orchestra and teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting classes. The successful candidate will work closely with the string faculty members as well as the other instrumental and vocal ensemble conductors to create a cohesive and exciting instrumental area. The Director of Orchestra will organize the annual Honors Orchestra that brings many students to the EKU campus and be a consistent resource for area music programs.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will
- Conduct the Symphony Orchestra, Musical Theatre Pit Orchestra, and Opera Orchestra.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate conducting classes.
- Work with Graduate Assistants and mentor conducting majors.
- Participate in curriculum development of courses at the music unit level.
- Maintain continued engagement in professional and scholarly activity.
- Organize the Honors Orchestra event.
- Recruit prospective students from a variety of schools in the region.
- Develop relationships with orchestra directors across the region.

The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher, conductor, and leader that will help lead recruiting efforts for the string areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Job Duties:

  • Maintain 12 teaching load hours in the fall and spring semesters, teaching courses as assigned at the times and in the locations necessary to meet the needs of EKU students.
  • Work with School of Music faculty members with special recruiting events such as Foster Music Camp, and High School and Honors Orchestra.
  • Utilize effective teaching methods, innovative teaching techniques, and teaching modalities, and multiple evaluation and assessment procedures as a means to help meet the needs of EKU students
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach, develop, and implement courses related to one’s curricular area
  • Develop and maintain an active research agenda
  • Keep up to date with one’s field and curricular areas by reading and reviewing current scholarly or creative works and by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, and faculty development activities
  • Advise students, fulfill program, departmental, college, and university committee assignments
  • Demonstrate the willingness and ability to work effectively with colleagues to support the mission of EKU, its academic units, and its campus community
