Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Lab Technician, Aviation supports the instructional and research missions of EKU’s School of Aviation by maintaining, calibrating, and repairing aviation laboratory equipment and facilities; preparing instructional aids and materials; ensuring safety and regulatory compliance; and assisting faculty and students in the proper use of tools, equipment, and learning resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: College graduate; postsecondary technical training preferred (aviation maintenance, avionics, aerospace technology, or related field).

Experience: 1–3 years of hands-on experience in aviation maintenance or technical lab.

Licensure & Certifications: Remote Pilot (DOT/FAA Part 107 Certificate holder preferred at time of application. If not, Part 107 certificate to be obtained by applicant w/in the first 90 days).

Job Duties:

  • 10% - Equipment Maintenance / Repair / Calibration Install, calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair aviation laboratory equipment, training aids, and test benches. Perform preventive maintenance on lab systems and aircraft instructional components. Ensure all equipment meets applicable FAA, manufacturer, and institutional standards. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Lab Setup & Instructional Support Prepare and stage equipment, tooling, and materials for laboratory classes, demonstrations, and hands-on student exercises. Assist faculty and students in the proper operation, care, and use of lab instruments, simulators, aircraft systems, and avionics benches. Support development of SOPs, job aids, and instructional guides. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Inventory, Procurement & Record-Keeping Maintain inventory of tools, spare parts, materials, consumables, and safety supplies. Track usage, request purchase orders, receive, catalog, and store new items. Keep accurate records including maintenance logs, calibration certificates, safety inspections, and usage reports. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Safety, Compliance & Facility Management Enforce safe laboratory practices, training for users, and proper storage of hazardous materials, tools, and equipment. Ensure compliance with FAA, OSHA, and EKU regulations. Maintain clean, orderly, and secure lab and hangar environments - (Essential)
  • 10% - Supervision & Training Provide work direction, training, and oversight to student assistants or lab support staff. Mentor students in lab best practices, safety, and technical methods. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Budget & Planning Support Assist in preparing and monitoring the laboratory budget. Recommend purchases of new equipment, tools, and supplies. Support grant proposals, equipment justification, and capital planning. - (Essential)
